If there was ever actual news to be posted on this site, here it is: I have found the love of my life. This is no small feat if you knew how non-committal I was prior to meeting her. There are so many things that I could say about how great she is to me, how beautiful she is to me, how vital she is to me -- but there has always been a space limit on this thing. And whenever I try to express how I feel about her, the English language -- or perhaps just my feeble command of it -- seems so inadequate. It seems as though there aren't words strong enough.

I am not one that makes decisions well. Where to eat lunch itself is a mini board meeting in my head. But with regards to things I'm sure about, there are only two things I've been certain about: My getting baptized and my getting married to Min. Of course, I've been sure of other things as well -- like that I love my mother and my mother loves me -- but where things entail a life-altering and reactive decision, there have been only two points where I have had no doubt.

When I first saw her, I thought she was the most beautiful girl in the world. And fourteen years later, I think the same, only with more conviction. Her telling me yes is the most beautiful music I've ever heard.

Shoot. So much for "regularly"! If my idea of "regular" was once a month, I would have to see a doctor!

After our last few performing duties at our residency at SFSU, the group came up to Banff for a six-week residency. We have been here three days and I can definitely get used to having fresh towels and my bed made for me everyday. I would give you an update for the various performances, etc., but they've already passed (and pssst... who cares?).

One very special event this month is my girlfriend's birthday, which also happens to be on Valentine's Day. You can understand how big of a deal this is: For a boyfriend, this means having the most important day of the year jumbled with the second most important day of the year. And when you handicap yourself with slight details like, you're not going to be there, things get interesting. Lucky for me, my girlfriend is pretty easy-going with things like my being completely inadequate.

I decided to start the New Year off by emphasizing a new resolve to update the site regularly. I did so by completely missing my monthly post in December 2008. This underscores the drama of change, a stratagem which works under the same premise as those weight-loss commercials that use bad lighting and have their models scowl in the "Before" pictures.

So, instead of bore everyone with concert details this month, I would like to announce a jump in productivity on this site. It has also come to my attention that very few of the old line of blog-writers are writing anymore, and so, in carrying the flag to an imagined finish line with the same heroism as someone who has sat out most of the race, I proclaim (to myself, my mom, and my girlfriend -- all three of us who are still aware of this site's existence) a new era of bustle on AdrianFungOnThe.Net -- much as that URL doesn't work. At least, not on the level of genius I had anointed it that fateful day at three in the morning.

Stay tuned. I love it when I make promises like this. And come up with a whopping "I got busy, okay??" in January 2010.

I'm really thankful for the opportunity to relay the news that the quartet has come back from our trip to New York last month with a win at an international competition and, with it, we now have management. This is a godsend on quite an unexpected level because I had been praying for quite some time about the dilemma that, with the four of us being Canadians, and without a proper residency or job, we would have to move back to Canada. With the combination between our recent successes in Munich and New York, however, we are now able to apply for work visas with our management doing the bulk of this work in applying for us. My mom and my girlfriend were both marveling about how timely this all is, the fact that these things happened in September and October, when our residency here in SF runs its course and we were getting nervous looking for something to keep us in the States legally. I'm a little in disbelief myself, but this is all to say that God is good, prayer is answered, and He's in control.

November has snuck up on us. The quartet has a concert in Nevada City, CA, with a fantastic pianist, Stephen Prutsman who has written a piano quintet as an accompaniment to Buster Keaton's silent film "Sherlock, Jr." It's a raucous and fun piece. November 15th. I'll be going to New York with my violist and playing Brahms Sextets with the Alexander Quartet. Shows on Nov 17, 20, 21, and 22. After that, we play a concert with San Jose Chamber Music Society. Vrebalov, Haydn, and Beethoven, with the Dvorak Piano Quintet with Prutsman.

In other news, my boy Eppy has come to town and we had a great time eating as much meat as possible. I don't think I had this much beef -- ever. One night, I switched it up and had lamb, but it seemed the motto was, "Bovine or ovine, either way, it's dinner."

I realize this monthly update is ridiculously late, and it took more time to problem-solve my way through this dilemma than is warranted. The solution I came to is a bi-monthly update and this way, I don't have to think up something for October either. I think I'll coin this flash of genius of mine: Killing two birds with one stone.

September

The most important thing I want to do right now is thank God for my quartet's recent 2nd prize win at a very prestigious international competition in Munich. That, and my family, girlfriend, and friends for having prayed so hard for us. I'd also like to thank Elfriede Uner, our beautiful, kind, and generous host for having put us up in Germany for three weeks, showing us all the Bavarian food and beer that we could consume. She was with us every step of the way and I think we've found a life-long friend. After the three weeks in Munich, we found ourselves in the middle of intense recording sessions for our upcoming CD release (Spring 2009) on Foghorn Classics.

October

October finds us returning to our friends at the Lake Tahoe Music Festival, again as their artists-in-residence, playing for elementary and middle school students. I think there is a radio interview and a concert somehow in this five day stint as well. (Oct 1-4)

We play two different programs the 5th and 12th in the Bay Area (Crowden: Schubert, Berg, Beethoven; Sierra: Mozart, Bartok, Mendelssohn). Afterwards, the quartet goes to New York for a week.

Sometimes when I open this browser to write something new, I picture four people shouting back at me, "WHO CARES?!?" I get over the uneasiness pretty quick, though, because it'll be like four people coming into my living room and getting ticked off whenever I speak. And that's not very polite and, hey, what are they doing with their feet on my coffee table, anyway? (As if I have a coffee table.)

What is happening this month?

August 5-10: The band and I will be teaching at a small chamber music institute in Oakville, Ontario which is very near and dear to me. I had spent a few summers there when I was a teenager and it changed the way I looked at music. To be a part of it now, and as faculty, is humbling.

August 6: A concert featuring works by Mozart, Bartok, and Beethoven. You want to come? Email me for details.

August 25-28: The quartet is making a brief journey to Nobody-Really-Knows-Exactly, California for a small chamber music festival. We will be perform a concert with the venerable Ms. Hampton.

I'm going to have to type this fast because internet is scarce here. First of all, the quartet is having fun rehearsing a bunch of new music and juggling our old favourites. We're also having fun coaching with whoever comes through the festival and playing concerts on sometimes as little as three days notice. Here is our schedule, like you care:

A lot of things are happening in June: baby giggles, big meals, and video games. I know my life is difficult and that several of you are rooting for me during these trying times. For your friendship, you have my sincerest gratitude. (Or was it "serious attitude"?)

In other news, I'm drinking Ribena. For all my Chinese readers, I'd like to take a quick poll: How do you pronounce Ribena? (For those of you who don't know what Ribena is, you're probably not Chinese.) Is it Rye-been-ah? Or Ruh-been-ah? Or is it Ruh-bay-nah?

Hi. So I want you to know that this site will be seeing a lot more of me, for better or for worse, starting tomorrow. You can look for at least one post on the other pages a week. No reason. Just going to.

This month, I'll also be preparing for my concerto performances with the Oakville Symphony. I used to imagine playing the Saint-Saens Concerto with an orchestra when I was little. Though people who come by this site couldn't care less about my upcoming performances, I carry on with these Monthly Lists like someone who hasn't gotten the hint. And there have been many. Like emailers commenting on everything -- like how it looks like I'm wearing brown shoes in this main page picture (I actually am) and whether I really say things like, in February, "I'm having a blast" (I actually do) -- except on the upcoming performances, like, "Great, I'm coming, how much are tickets" or "Sounds good, sorry I can't make it". I agree that either of these two proposed comments would constitute a lie. I don't think any of you would come, perhaps none of it sounds good, and you're not sorry you can't make it. On second thought, maybe commenting on everything except the performances is my readership's way of being nice to me.

On with this month's events:

And it's a New Year. I'd like to welcome in a new addition: Mr. Nolan Charles Li, who is my nephew and has not only burped up milk on me, peed on me, and pooped in the middle of my changing his diaper in the two short weeks I spent with him, but has made my heart melt like a stick of butter in the microwave. More on him on the other pages.

This month sees us preparing for our next half-season with new works to our repertoire by Barber, Bartok, Beethoven, Berg, Mendelssohn, and Shostakovich and, as far as I can tell, a fiendishly difficult quartet to learn by Huck Hodge, for which the work's premiere is scheduled next month in New York. I'm excited to see it unfold.

January 3rd: The quartet appears with UCSF Chancellor's Concert Series at Cole Hall, SF, CA. Free admission. Works by Vrebalov and Shostakovich.

January 20th: I'll play Debussy Cello Sonata with Stevan Cavalier, pianist, presented by the Sierra Chamber Society in Walnut Creek, CA. Tickets are $19.

January 27th: The quartet is presented in Montalvo Center for the Arts' Greenberg Lecture Series. An all-Shostakovich program of his String Quartets No. 2, 7, and 13.

December - News

December 1st, the Afiara Quartet will appear with San Francisco Friends of Chamber Music along with other affiliates in the Berkeley Piano Club Room. The marathon concert begins at 3:30 pm, though the Afiaras will appear in the second half, starting at 5:30.

December 2nd, 11 am, in the Recital Hall of the San Francisco Conservatory, I will give my last solo recital: works by Schumann, Britten, and Saint-Saens.

December 6th, 4pm, the Afiaras will play Beethoven's Op. 95 in the Concert Hall of the Conservatory.

December 7th, 8 pm, the Afiaras will play Mozart K. 575 and Charpentier's Midnight Mass with the Notre Dame des Victoires Choir.

December 12th, 6 pm, the Afiaras will appear again with San Francisco Performances' Salon Series, Hotel Rex. Tickets are $18. Works by Briseno, Zorn, and Mendelssohn.

October and November - News

Afraid I won't have a chance to update so I'm going to do the "News" for the next two months. The Afiaras will be returning to the Sierra Chamber Music Society in Walnut Creek October the 14th, going to New York for a week after that, and recording some Shostakovich at the end of the month. Immediately after our return, we'll play a full program of Mozart, Zorn, Shostakovich, and Beethoven at the Noe Valley Chamber Music Series (Nov. 4th). On the 8th, the quartet collaborates in a choreographed performance of Shostakovich Quartet No. 5. Afterwards, we're trying to stay low for the month in order to learn some more repertoire for concerts in the next calendar year.

Afiara String Quartet meets BLUNT DELPHIX!

Don't miss this special concert of live hip hop. Experience the characters of Todd Fox, epideMIC, Tony Pounds, and 8W on stage with the Afiaras covering our latest songs. The concert will be in the Recital Hall of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music at 8 pm, Friday, September 14th.

You will hear the premieres of the newly-recorded "Well Ripped", "Hands Down", "All Purpose War" and "Fare Thee Well" as well as a mish-mash of solos and old releases. For the loyal readers of this site, you might remember the single "Hollow"; it'll be performed live on the 14th as well.

People coming will also receive a complimentary compilation CD of Blunt Delphix old and new releases, courtesy of the City States.

Other News

The Afiara String Quartet will be giving the world premiere of a piece written for them by composer Jason Bush. The concert will take place on September 28th at 7 pm at St. John's in San Francisco.

News - August

The Afiaras are back and grinding our noses to the mill. (I think I just pushed together two expressions and pretended like I knew what I was doing.) After a couple of weeks in Canada, we're now wading our way through the foggy mist of San Francisco. There's something about walking in clouds: You eventually get really wet.

The next Afiara Quartet performance: August 17th, at Seventh Avenue Presbyterian Church, presented by Seventh Avenue Performances. Tickets are $15/12. If you can make it out, please do! We would love to see people show up to cheer us on towards our competition in Banff. Your attendance will support the Afiaras both morally and financially. Haydn, Bartok, and Mendelssohn are on the 7:30 pm menu.

There will be also a concert August 18th at the SF Conservatory, Recital Hall at 8 pm. We'll play Beethoven, Mozart, and Webern for this one. Come out if you can!

Recently stumbled upon an article about the quartet and our recent foray into blending hip hop into the mix. The only problem I have with the article is that I look as though I have no teeth. I don't know how I managed that; it's like a magic trick or something. "Look, Mom, no ~~hands~~ dental plan!"

Looks who's back and pining for attention again. It's okay if you don't give it to me. After so much neglect I deserve no readership anyway. I intend on picking back up the writing habit, though. Sometimes I just need a good kick in the ~~a-----~~ apathy.

I thought this was a neat picture taken at one of the concerts in May. It was taken during the West Coast premiere of Huck Hodge's piece "Phantaisie". As you can see, I'm a chiropractic nightmare.

Here's another one. Seeing your face pixelated is scary. As if you've been Big Brothered. Try it sometime.

July - Concerts and News this Month

The Afiaras are taking a break for two weeks in July, but not before one more concert at the Lake Tahoe Music Festival on the 8th. If you're in Tahoe, Afiarians unite! (Pretend I didn't just write that.) I'll be playing a recital of Debussy, Prokofiev, and Schumann with pianist Clement Ng on the 21st in Hamilton, Ontario. Blunt Delphix are scheduled to record some mixtape freestyles mid-month.

Classical News: Late May and June

If you're in the San Francisco area and want to check out the Afiara Quartet's last performances before they leave in mid-June, check out our upcoming concerts: May 25th (a mix of old and new) and May 27th (a concert full of premieres). June 1st, the Afiaras will play Vrebalov's Pannonia Boundless at Knuth Hall at SFSU, and the Shostakovich Octet with the Alexander Quartet. Email if you're interested. June 10th, catch the Afiaras playing Beethoven's Op. 59, No. 2 in Walnut Creek, presented by the Sierra Chamber Music Society. After that, we're going down to Colorado to teach and play at Chamber Music of the Rockies in Beaver Creek. So, to all Colorado-bound Afiarians, catch our public performances June 13th and 20th at the Vilar Performing Arts Center.

After June, the Afiaras won't be playing in San Francisco until August.

Classical News

The Afiaras will work with the Kronos Quartet in their "Signature Works" workshop series in Carnegie Hall at the end of April and will be back in San Francisco to play full recitals at Seventh Avenue Performances (May 13th) and the San Francisco Conservatory (May 25th). On May 27th, a special collaboration with Project TTT follows; appearing with timpanist Louis Siu, who is eagerly promoting David Herbert's innovative tenor timpani (a new instrument with a range never before possible with timpanis), the Afiaras will give two premieres from composers Alain Chiu and Winton White.

I'll also play (for the first time on the West Coast) Huck Hodge's Phantaisie for solo amplified cello.

Tropicana Fruit Squeeze

Tropicana has released a new drink line, described: "Looking for something juicy? We've squeezed real Tropicana fruit juice into cool, crisp water, giving it a light, refreshing taste. It's water so juicy, you'll want to squeeze one for yourself." Water so juicy. It could just be me, but the problem I see here is that, flipped backwards, you could just as easily say, "Juice so watery." "It's juice so watery, you'll wonder why you didn't just water down the juice yourself, why you just paid full price for half the juice, why this purchase did not strike you as an immediately bad idea." I can just see how this kind of thing would not have flown 5-10 years ago.

So much for updating regularly. It's been hard getting enough time to update the Events page itself and I'm about to give it up for loss. The easiest way to find the next performances is on the Afiara site. I just can't bring myself to html my way through all that stuff for now. There aren't any solo performances in the next month anyway.

The Bison Effect

I read in Time magazine the other day that bison has rebounded back in numbers from near-extinction. The reason? Digging back to Old West roots: Apparently, bison on plates are in vogue with American appetites again. Just strange to think of the effect of marketing and consumption. That in order to save bison, we have to eat bison. In other news, I recently read that Captain America is dead. Somehow, someone thinks killing a superhero will bring back their golden days of this same marketing and consumption. To be sure, it worked for the Superman franchise. But this one's a stretch and a little too obvious in its pining for attention, if you ask me. (I know, who's asking me.)

I'm going to attempt to update this site fairly regularly. Some might call it a New Years Resolution, and since the Chinese have recently passed theirs, I figured, "Why not?"

The next concert is February 15th at 7:30 pm, Knuth Hall, SFSU. If you're in the city and you're not there, you probably have better things to do. But if those things have anything to do with lint removal, head down because it's free. Works by Haydn, Bartok and Mendelssohn.

To the 8W locals, I plan on writing less, but more frequently, on the Irrefragable page. It's great to see so many of you still clicking. You'll be happy to know that AdrianFungOnThe.Net has recently hit its 250 000th visitor mark. In recent news, I'd like to draw attention to what I've been most busy with recently: The Afiara String Quartet. Come support the performances if you're in the area and stay tuned to that site for updates, a recent history of performances, and possibly some media files of the quartet. Amos, the webmaster of this site, is also overseeing Afiara.com, so many thanks to him.

Also, a new album is coming out, featuring Blunt Ethiks (epideMIC and 8W) and the crowd favourite Delphix (Tony Pounds and Todd Fox). The groups have merged into Blunt Delphix, which -- with Ep and I being Chinese; Tony, Italian; and Todd, all-American and Abercrombie rugged -- also goes under the pseudonym, Blond Ethnics.
